Every year, all over the world, Pride month brings something special. Streets fill with colour, communities come together and for many LGBTQIA+ people, it’s a time for them to be celebrated and supported. Pride is more than a month, it’s a reminder of what we can be for each other – all year round.

But Pride isn’t just for the people marching. It’s for all of us and the way we choose to show up during this month (and beyond) says a lot about the kind of community we are.

Because community is the heart of Pride. It grew from a movement of people who needed each other. Who found strength, safety and joy in togetherness. That spirit hasn’t changed.

For many LGBTQIA+ people, Pride is a moment of relief as much as a celebration. It’s a time when the world reflects back something affirming – that they belong, that their lives and loves are worth celebrating and that they are not alone.

When we show up for that, we add to it. We make the community bigger and the celebration louder.

Ways to celebrate together

You don’t need to do anything grand to be part of Pride. Here are some simple, meaningful ways to celebrate with your community:

  • Attend a local event. Pride events happen across Australia all year round. From parades and parties to film screenings, art shows and community markets, there’s something for everyone.
  • Support LGBTQIA+ owned businesses and organisation. One of the most tangible ways to celebrate community is to invest in it. Seek out LGBTQIA+ owned or led businesses, donate to community organisations or volunteer your time with a local group.
  • Amplify LGBTQIA+ voices and stories. Share content created by LGBTQIA+ people. Recommend books, films, podcasts from the trans and gender diverse community, and art from queer creators. Celebration includes making space for people's stories to be heard.
  • Show up for the people in your life. For your LGBTQIA+ friends, family members, and colleagues, your presence and support means more than you might know. Check in, celebrate with them, and let them know they are valued, not just in June, but always.

Carrying Pride beyond June

One of the most powerful things about Pride month is the energy it creates. Celebrating Pride together doesn’t end on July 1. The celebration and support continues all year round. So as we celebrate this month, we can also think about what we can sustain.

That might mean continuing to support the organisations you discovered during Pride. It might mean keeping the conversations going with your family or colleagues. It might just mean remembering, in the small moments throughout the year, to show up.

Because when we do that, when we commit to celebrating together not just for a month but as a practice, that's when Pride really means something.

Happy Pride. Let’s celebrate together.
